Carter received US Senate’s approval as the new Secretary of Defense.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Former US Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, who supports the idea of providing Ukraine with lethal arms, won US Senate’s approval as the new Secretary of Defense.

Carter was nominated by US President Barack Obama in December 2014 to replace Chuck Hagel as the US Defense Secretary.

In his February speech to the US Senate Armed Services Committee, Carter pointed that he inclines in the direction of providing Ukraine with lethal arms amid the ongoing conflict between Kiev forces and independence supporters in the east of the country. He also said it was important to end mandatory defense budget spending caps in the United States.
