WASHINGTON, January 22 (Sputnik) — The United States government should not release al-Qaeda operatives from US facilities, US Senator Lindsey Graham told Sputnik on Wednesday.

“It’s insane to release al-Qaeda operatives, based on an arbitrary passage of time,” the Republican Senator said of reports, indicating that the United States prematurely released a member of the al-Qaeda terrorist group. “To any country holding an al-Qaeda operative, now is not the time to release them.”

There is “a disconnect” between US policy and the threat of terrorist organizations on the ground, Graham stated, adding that the organizations are now having “more capacity to strike the homeland than before 9/11.”

Addressing recent reports that the United States released al-Qaeda operative Ali Saleh Kahlah Marri back to Qatar last week, Graham said that “we’ve somehow concluded in America that we’re in a period where you can let people go and they won’t go back to the fight.”

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that Marri had been released from a US federal prison last week before fulfilling a 15 year sentence, but no official statement explaining the release was provided.

President Obama stated in his Tuesday State of the Union speech that he had halved the prison population at Guantanamo Bay, a facility where multiple terror suspects are detained, and intended to fully shut it down in the nearest future.
