WASHINGTON, January 17 (Sputnik) — Obamacare is a non-viable law that hurts US citizens, and it should be substituted with other reforms, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Friday, commenting on the resignation of the top health official.
“The role of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator is supposed to be about overseeing these important programs, not implementing a gigantic, unworkable law that hurts hard-working Americans,” McConnell said in a statement. “We also call on President Obama to work with us to replace this law with real reforms that lower costs and don’t hurt the middle class the way Obamacare does.”
The White House has continuously said that the Affordable Care Act is a much-needed law that prohibits insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions, saves money and insures higher quality care.
On Friday CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner announced that she was stepping down. Principal Deputy Administrator Andy Slavitt is going to become the Acting Administrator after her resignation, a note from the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell said.
According to the CMS data, the agency, whose annual budget is about $900 billion, currently manages and implements two government insurance programs that benefit about 123 million US citizens.
