Police responded to reports of gunfire around 9:30 a.m. inside the Melbourne Square Mall which had yet to open. Around 100 people were in the mall at time of shooting. Most of them were employees preparing to open shops.

The shooter opened fire in the mall's food court and the mall was evacuated shortly after. Initially, they found one person dead — believed to be the shooter — and two injured. One of the injured died later at the hospital.
Police said that the shooter took his own life after he killed his wife who worked at the mall. One of her co-workers then tried to get the gun away from him and was shot in the struggle.
