Adel Abdul Bary, 54, entered a guilty plea before a US district court in New York last September in connection with the truck bombings at US embassies in Dar es Salam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. The August 7, 1998 twin attacks killed 224 people, including 12 Americans, and wounded over 4,500.
On September 19, 2014, Bary admitted to three charges of conspiring to kill US nationals, conspiring to use explosives in the murder and destruction of property, as well as threatening to carry out these acts.
Earlier this month, another defendant in the bombing case who was scheduled to stand trial with an accomplice on Monday died in custody. A total of 21 people linked to the al-Qaeda Islamist group were charged with the deadly US embassy bombings 16 years ago. Six of the convicted militants are serving life sentences in the United States, while eight — including Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri — have been killed by the US military in the years since 2001.
