WASHINGTON, November 5 (RIA Novosti) — Republicans are projected to maintain a majority in the US House of Representatives, NBC News reports.
Early projections show Republicans could add 10 seats to their current majority of 233 seats. All 435 seats of the House are up for reelection.
US midterm congressional elections are held two years in the middle of the president's four-year term. The Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives but are looking to also take control of the Senate, where the Democrats currently have a 55 — 45 majority.
As of 8:00 p.m. Washington time, Republicans have garnered 40 seats in the Senate, while Democrats have 37 seats. A party needs to have 51 out of 100 seats to control the upper house of US Congress. The previous Senate elections put the Democrats in control the Senate with 55 mandates.
Republicans have emerged victorious in the states of Mississippi, Tennessee, Maine, Alabama and retained control of both Oklahoma seats, while Democrats kept Illinois, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, according to Fox News.
