Russia's Maria Sharapova has reached the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament with $4.5 million up for grabs in prize money after defeating Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru.

In a match that lasted 3 hours 28 minutes and ended after midnight in Miami, former World No. 1 Sharapova defeated 26-seeded Dulgheru 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).

Next up for Sharapova (16-seed) will be Germany's Andrea Petkovic (21-seed), who beat Serbia's Jelena Jankovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in her quarterfinal match.

Petkovic, who earlier knocked out the World's No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark from the tournament, is cautious in her remarks about the upcoming match against the Russian, saying she will do her best to defeat Sharapova.

"Maria is the type of player who also goes for her shots, and on a good day, it's tough to push your game plan through. But I'll do anything to beat her. That's all I can do," she was quoted as saying on the WTA website.
