- Tatyana Matveyeva won gold in the women's 69kg category lifting a total of 257kg (112kg in the snatch and 145kg in the clean and jerk). Natalya Davydova of Ukraine took silver with a total of 239 kilograms (109 + 130). Dominika Misterska of Poland finished third with a total of 221 kilograms.
- Natalya Zabolotnaya and Valentina Popova won gold and silver, respectively, in the women's 75kg category. Zabolotnaya lifted a total of 278kg (127kg in the snatch and 151kg in the clean and jerk). Popova finished with a total of 272kg (122 + 150). Hripsime Khurshudyan of Armenia took bronze with a total of 261kg (115 + 146)
* At the 2006 European gymnastics championships in Volos, Greece (through May 7):
- The Russian men's team won the qualifying round with a total of 273.550 points in the six events. Ukraine took second place with 268.900 points, and France finished third (268.825 points)
