* At the 2006 European weightlifting championship in Wladyslawowo, Poland (through May 7):

- Tatyana Matveyeva won gold in the women's 69kg category lifting a total of 257kg (112kg in the snatch and 145kg in the clean and jerk). Natalya Davydova of Ukraine took silver with a total of 239 kilograms (109 + 130). Dominika Misterska of Poland finished third with a total of 221 kilograms.

- Natalya Zabolotnaya and Valentina Popova won gold and silver, respectively, in the women's 75kg category. Zabolotnaya lifted a total of 278kg (127kg in the snatch and 151kg in the clean and jerk). Popova finished with a total of 272kg (122 + 150). Hripsime Khurshudyan of Armenia took bronze with a total of 261kg (115 + 146)

* At the 2006 European gymnastics championships in Volos, Greece (through May 7):

- The Russian men's team won the qualifying round with a total of 273.550 points in the six events. Ukraine took second place with 268.900 points, and France finished third (268.825 points)

* At the $600,000 J&S Cup WTA tennis tournament in Warsaw, Poland (through May 7)

- Anna Chakvetadze advanced to the singles quarterfinals by defeating seed No. 9 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-4, 6-3

- Third-seeded Russian pair Yelena Likhovtseva and Anastasia Myskina beat Poland's Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the doubles semifinals

* At the $670,000 Estoril Open tennis tournament in Estoril, Portugal (through May 7):

- Marat Safin and Dmitry Tursunov advanced to the men's doubles semifinals, beating top-seeded Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-4, 6-7, 10-5

- Tursunov, seeded No. 5 for the tournament, failed to advance to the quarterfinals of men's singles, losing to unseeded Frederico Gil of Portugal, 6-4 4-6 1-6

* Defending champion Lokomotiv-Belogorye Belgorod beat Dinamo Moscow 3:2 (22:25, 23:25, 25:22, 25:23, 15:10) in the away second leg of the best-of-five finals of the Russian men's volleyball championship. Series tied 1-1.

Iskra Odintsovo beat Fakel Novy Urengoy in the second leg of the best-of-five bronze-medal tie, 3:0 (25:17, 25:21, 25:21) at home. Iskra leads in the series 2-0.

The remaining final and bronze-medal legs are set for May 8 (May 9 and May 13 if necessary).
