The match between Jönköpings Södra and Östersund was heading towards full-time when a masked supporter dressed in black stormed onto the pitch and brutally assaulted the away keeper Aly Keita, the Swedish tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet reported.

Before both players and security guards intervened and arrested the attacker, he managed to chase the keeper and hit him several times.

Keita, who had been struck in the temple, had to be tended to by medics and taken to the changing rooms. Subsequently, the game, which was heading towards a 1-1 draw, was stopped by the referee.

"The Östersund goalkeeper was hurt and had to be treated by doctors. He was not fit to return to the pitch," match delegate Nicklas Bengtsson said.

Jönköping manager Jimmy Thelin said the club had "no idea" who the assaulter was and where he came from.

"This is outrageous. I can only thank the gods that the fool had no knife on him, Östersund Chairman Daniel Kindberg told Swedish newspaper Sportbladet.

At present, a 17-year-old from the mid-Swedish town of Södertälje is being questioned about the attack on Aly Keita. The assaulter is also suspected of assault and false alarm after police during the arrest received information that a bomb admittedly had been deployed at the Stadsparksvallen sports facility in Jönköping. The entire football arena was evacuated upon the news of the alleged bomb, but a search of the area found no bomb at the site.

At present it remains unclear why the 17-year-old attacked Aly Keita. Preliminary investigator Annelie Jönsson Hammo admitted that there are many reasons for speculation. Immediately after the scandal, it was rumored that the match between Jönköping Södra and Östersund was rigged, which is why the underage assaulter was forced to drastic measures to get the match canceled at all costs.

Andreas Jerat, press officer at Sweden's official gambling operator Svenska Spel told Swedish Radio the company's gaming monitors right now were going through related games.

Remarkably, this is a second time a game in the Swedish top division has been abandoned this season. In spring, a match between Gothenburg and Malmö was halted as a firework went off at the feet of a substitute who was warming up. Subsequently, Malmö was awarded a 3-0 technical victory.
