IOC Announces Mechanism to Protect Athletes From Harassment at Rio Olympics

The International Olympic Committee announced the creation of a "clear structure" to be put in place for the Rio Olympics participants to report incidents of abuse or harassment in a bid to protect the athletes, for the first time in the Games' history.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — This mechanism will be coordinated by an IOC Welfare Officer on site in the Olympic Village during the Games. 

"The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that it has taken an important step forward in the protection of athletes from harassment and abuse in sport in time for this summer’s Olympic Games Rio 2016," the IOC said in a statement.

According to the statement, all reported incidents will be dealt with confidentially. Local law enforcement agencies and relevant disciplinary channels will also be involved in their investigation.

The Olympic Village in Rio, which will host all participating athletes, is set to open Sunday and close on August 24.
