General Secretary of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Malaysian Alex Soosay stepped down amid a corruption investigation, AFC said in a statement on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Alex Soosay, who became AFC General Secretary in 2008, was suspended last month, after Malaysian media accused him of hiding financial documents from a probe into AFC practices under former president Mohamed bin Hammam. Hammam was banned by FIFA from football in 2011 over corruption allegations.

“Dato’ Alex Soosay has tendered his resignation as AFC General Secretary with immediate effect,” the statement said.

AFC thanked Soosay for his “commitment to Asian football” during 20-year-long career in the organization.

Until a new general secretary is appointed, the Asian governing football body’s will be managed by AFC Deputy General Secretary Windsor John.

World football is in the midst of a large-scale corruption scandal following late-May US Department of Justice release of charges against 14 people — including nine senior FIFA officials – for money laundering, wire fraud and racketeering.

The scandal led to the resignation of long-standing FIFA president Joseph Blatter on June 2, four days after he was re-elected to a fifth term.
