MOSCOW (Sputnik) Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin topped the list of Russian players in the US National Hockey League (NHL) receiving the most media attention in March, according to figures published by the R-Sport news agency and Medialogia on Wednesday.

The winger who leads the league with 53 goals generated 1655 mentions in Russian media last month, followed by Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin (1001) and Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky (756).

R-Sport's rating system in collaboration with the Medialogia monitor is based on 24,200 television, radio, newspaper, magazine, news agency and Internet media sources in Russia.

Ovechkin, who won the top scorer's Rocket Richard Trophy for the third consecutive regular season and is among three candidates for the most valuable player Hart Memorial Trophy, had ranked first in R-Sport's "media rating" list among Russian NHL players in 2014.

The Capitals face off with the New York Islanders in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at 7:00 pm (23:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
