Portugal’s star captain Cristiano Ronaldo has broken the scoring record of the European Championships and now boasts a tally of 23 goals scored in qualification and finals combined.

MOSCOW, November 15 (Sputnik) – The famed forward Cristiano Ronaldo, 29, has broken the scoring record of the European Championships during his most recent game where Portugal beat Armenia, the Guardian reports.

The Portugal captain now boasts a tally of 23 goals scored in European qualification and finals combined, beating Denmark’s Jon Dahl Tomasson and Turkey's Hakan Sukur total, according to TSN.

Ronaldo said he was sure it would happen some day and “was not obsessed with that because I will play many more games for the national team,” as quoted by the UEFA. “But of course I am happy, mainly because I broke the record in Portugal in front of our supporters. It is another special moment for me and I am certain it will be in my gallery,” The Real Madrid forward added.

After the victory over Armenia, Portugal has taken the second place in Group I. The football team is one point behind Denmark. “We are in good shape at the moment in qualifying; Denmark also won, but the team are doing very well at the moment and if we win our game in hand we go top,” Ronaldo said as quoted by UEFA.

Earlier this week, Ronaldo won the Pichichi award, an annual trophy given to the top scorer in the Spanish football league by Marca, a Spanish national daily sport newspaper. “Everyone has their own way of thinking and working. Playing football is what I most enjoy and I try to do my best. I'll never tire of winning things,” Ronaldo told Marca.

In early November, Ronaldo has received a third Golden Shoe award, given to top scorers in any European league. “This is a special day for me. It is the third one, but it is as if I was winning it for the first time again. I want to share it with everyone who has helped me. I promise the fans that I will always give my best on the field because I still have many years ahead at Real Madrid,” football player said, according to a press release on the Real Madrid website.
