SOCHI, February 21 (R-Sport) – Marie-Philip Poulin scored the overtime game-winner as Canada recovered from the brink of defeat to beat the United States 3-2 and earn a fourth consecutive women’s hockey gold at the Sochi Olympics on Thursday.

Poulin first sent the game to overtime, then won it for a Canadian team that had been 2-0 down with 3:26 remaining of regulation. Goals from Brianne Jenner and Poulin tied up the game, beating previously invulnerable U.S. goaltender Jessie Venter.

In overtime, Poulin completed a famous victory with a power-play goal that keeps intact Canada’s record of not having lost at the Olympics since defeat to the U.S. in the Nagano 1998 final.

Poulin's winning goal was a wrist shot off a sharp pass by Laura Fortino. It came seconds after the Canadians had been aggrieved by a call not to give them a penalty shot for a clear foul by Hilary Knight on Hayley Wickenheiser from on a breakaway.

Earlier, the U.S. had come close to victory on goals from Meghan Duggan and Jamie Carpenter.

Switzerland won the bronze earlier in the day with a 4-3 win over Sweden.
