Russian Premier League side Dynamo Moscow has vowed to hold the culprits in a paintball attack on its players criminally accountable for their actions.

Assailants in camouflage shot several players with paint balls from behind a fence at the club's training base outside Moscow earlier Friday.

It was the latest attack from fans disgruntled at the club's lowly 13th position in the standings.

"A group of individuals after training exercises tried to shoot the players from paintball guns," the club said in a website statement. "We are convinced this was a planned and organized action. This is a challenge to the club, and we will answer in the toughest possible manner."

Dynamo midfielder Alan Gatagov had earlier told R-Sport he was seeking advice on prosecuting those responsible for the "vile" episode in which several players were hit in the head.

"We intend to use all the resources available to us to find and hold the shooters accountable in any way the current law allows, including criminal prosecution," the club said.

The statement signed by club president Gennady Solovev added it would name and shame the attackers.

Gatagov called on the club to protect its players more effectively. "Words fail me," Gatagov said. "What should we do? Should each of us hire a personal bodyguard?"

In the same statement, Dynamo's official fan club distanced itself from the attack.

"The leadership of the Dynamo supporters' club officially announces that it has no relation whatsoever to the incident."
