France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dug deep to defeat world No. 52 Benoit Paire to reach the third round at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday.

Tsonga, seeded fifth, had to hurl all his efforts to eliminate his fellow Frenchman on his way to securing a 7-6(7), 7-5 win.

The next opponent for Tsonga, 27, will be Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, who earlier knocked out 12th seed Milos Raonic.

Elsewhere, two other seeded Frenchmen departed.

Eleventh seed Richard Gasquet suffered a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic, who will now play eighth seed John Isner in round three.

Gilles Simon, seeded 15, was upset by Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov Jr. 6-3, 6-4.

In the next round, Dolgopolov, ranked 20 in the world, will face defending champion Andy Murray, who is yet to play at all after reaching the third round thanks to a bye and a walkover.

Elsewhere, German veteran Tommy Haas dispatched Spain’s Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-3.

Haas, 34, will encounter the winner of the all-Serbian clash between sixth seed Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki.
