Zenit St. Petersburg hammered in five goals as they demolished 10-man Spartak Moscow in a top-of-the-table Russian Premier League clash and go clear at the top Sunday.

Russia midfielder Roman Shirokov scored twice, while Spartak saw their ex-Celtic winger Aiden McGeady sent off for a vicious tackle.

"Today the team mood was absolutely great," said Zenit head coach Luciano Spalletti.

"Like the whole stadium I can only applaud the guys for a perfect game, they pressed and controlled the ball very well."

On 15 minutes, ex-Everton midfielder Diniyar Bilyaletdinov was caught on the ball by Zenit midfielder Igor Denisov, who played in forward Maxim Kanunnikov.

The youngster picked up the pass and beat three defenders before opening the scoring with a distant shot into the top-right corner.

Zenit winger Vladimir Bystrov doubled the hosts' lead seven minutes after the break with a similar strike after Zenit's Italy defender Domenico Criscito intercepted a pass from Spartak midfielder Rafael Carioca.

Spartak were awarded penalty on the hour after Zenit defender Tomas Hubocan put in a late tackle on Spartak striker Emmanuel Emenike.

Bilyaletdinov's miserable afternoon continued as he saw his shot saved in spectacular one-handed style by Vyacheslav Malafeev before Criscito stopped him scoring on the rebound.

Just two minutes later, Shirokov made Spartak pay, volleying the ball into the Spartak net from a pass by Criscito.

A minute later passed when Spartak's Irish midfielder Aiden McGeady went in on Shirokov studs-up and picked up a deserved red card.

More misplaced Spartak passing led to Zenit's fourth as Denisov picked up the ball and fed midfielder Viktor Faizulin, who scored with a powerful finish.

A Shirokov header finished Spartak off on 88 minutes, after Dikan parried Faizulin's shot into his path.

On Friday, FC Kuban defeated rivals FC Krasnodar 2-1 in a derby clash.

Later Saturday Lokomotiv Moscow face Alania Vladikavkaz and Terek Grozny play FC Volga.

In four matches Sunday, CSKA Moscow host Anzhi and Rubin Kazan welcome Dynamo Moscow, while Amkar Perm face Mordovia Saransk and Rostov meet Krylya Sovetov.
