Michael Jung rode to Olympic gold in the individual eventing final on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old German, riding Sam, racked up 40.60 in penalties in the dressage and jumped two clear rounds to win the competition by 2.7 points over Sara Algotsson Ostholt of Sweden, who took silver.
Jung's compatriot, Sandra Auffarth, with whom he barely two hours earlier took gold in the team eventing, claimed the bronze after totaling 44.80.
Auffarth would have made it a German 1-2 but for a 4.0 point penalty in the cross country.
Zara Phillips, granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, came eighth.
