Former New Jersey Devils defenseman Ray Giroux has been placed on waivers by KHL team Traktor Chelyabinsk, the club said Tuesday.
Due to the KHL's limit of five foreign players on a team’s roster, Traktor had to free one place for newly-signed Finnish forward Juhamatti Aaltonen.
Any KHL club may now sign Giroux, 36.
The Canadian played 38 NHL games for the Devils and the New York Islanders, scoring 13 points, before moving to Russia in 2005, where he won the Russian Super League title in his first season with Ak Bars Kazan.
He has since played for SKA St. Petersburg and Traktor Chelyabinsk, helping the latter to reach last year’s KHL Eastern Conference final.
The new KHL season starts September 4.
