Olympic 100 meters champion Usain Bolt has suffered a surprise defeat to Yohan Blake at the Jamaican trials as both men booked their place at the Olympics in August.

Bolt ran a time of 9.86 seconds in Friday’s event as reigning world champion Blake stormed to win in 9.75 seconds, beating Bolt’s fastest time of the season and making him the fourth-fastest man in history.

The third Jamaican team spot went to former record-holder Asafa Powell, who set a time of 9.88 seconds, although all of the eight runners in the final ran under the Olympic qualifying standard.

In the women’s event, 2008 gold medal-winner Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce qualified with ease in a time of 10.70 seconds, followed by Veronica Campbell-Brown, the 200 meters gold medalist in Beijing, who ran a time of 10.82 seconds to take the other place in the team.
