Russian Minister of Sports, Tourism and Youth Policy Vitaly Mutko believes Russia will continue to fail at the Olympic Games like it did at the Vancouver Winter Olympics unless the regions create projects on the development of sports and choose a method to specialize in sports.
“Projects on the development of sports were presented by 83 Russian regions at the International Sports Forum in Moscow. The interest of the regions in these projects is very important because without their participation, there will be no development in sports, no champion training and, therefore, no victories,” Mutko said.
The Ministry intends to create 45 centers for the development of sports in Russia, Mutko said.
“We will determine the role of Russian regions and their specialization in the strategy on the development of physical education. It is impossible to put up with the current situation: only 19 Russian regions are represented in Russian national teams, which include 50% of the athletes from Moscow and 20% from the Moscow region.”
“We should give up the ‘manual control’ which exists in sports today and create an effective system, a kind of ‘bench.’ As Irina Vinner said, ‘Oaks don’t grow in the desert,’ and I agree with her. It is strange to expect future champions to appear as if from nowhere. It is important to understand that aliens will not arrive to win at the Olympics and that it is necessary to train future champions,” Mutko continued.
The minister added that Russia will participate in competitions in 86 different sports, but actually today Russian athletes are competitive only in 30 of them.
“There will be fierce competition at the Winter Olympics. Some 29 countries won medals in Vancouver, including 19 countries with gold medals. Everyone understood one thing: soon developed countries will consider the achievements in sports the measure of economic development.”
