Serena Williams, the world's number one women's tennis player, had to withdraw from three tennis events to undergo surgery on her right foot.

Serena Williams, the world's number one women's tennis player, had to withdraw from three tennis events to undergo surgery on her right foot, the official WTA Tour website said.

Williams will miss WTA Tour events in Istanbul, Cincinnati, and Montreal.

The website said Williams cut her foot on some broken glass while at a restaurant. The severity of the injury is unknown.

"I'm so upset I won't be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery. Thank you for all of your support. I can't wait to get back on the courts," the website quoted Serena as saying.
