Former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova has won the Cellular South Cup in the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship tennis tournament in Memphis, Tennessee.

Former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova has won the Cellular South Cup in the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship tennis tournament in Memphis, Tennessee.

In the final tournament on Saturday, Sharapova defeated Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson 6-2 6-1. The match, whish secured the Russian her first win in the current season, lasted one hour and 6 minutes.

The 22-year-old tennis player, who currently holds the 16th position in the world rating, earlier beat U.S.'s Shenay Perry and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Britain's Elena Baltacha, and Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.

Sharapova, the 2009 richest Russian athlete, whose income mainly comes from advertising contracts, will receive $37,000 and 280 ranking points for her win.

The championship's prize fund totals $220,000.

In January, the Russian, who holds three Grand Slam titles, including the 2008 Australian Open, lost the 2010 Australian Open suffering a defeat on the opening day.

In September 2009, she won the Women's Tennis Association tournament in Tokyo.
