VOLGOGRAD, January 29 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian champion of the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona in the women's 3,000-meter race died unexpectedly in Volgograd, a city on the Volga River, January 27, a spokesman for the local sports committee said Monday.

Medium-distance runner Yelena Romanova, 43, worked as a coach at a local sports school and trained members of the Russian athletic team.

"We do not know the exact cause of Yelena's death, but we are convinced that it is linked to heart problems," the spokesman said, adding that high training loads could have affected her health.
