In all, 21 films were competing for the main prize at the Venice Film Festival, the Golden Lion. The award ceremony is taking place on the Lido in the Venetian Lagoon.

'Joker' directed by Todd Philips has won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival.

The film, which is going to hit the big screen in October, stars Joaquin Phoenix, along with Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron.

Set in 1981, 'Joker' tells the story of failed stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck/Joker.

Cinema-goers took to Twitter to share their reactions to the news. Some are really happy for the film's success.

But others appeared to be quite puzzled by the news.
