A four-year-old girl was shot dead during a road rage incident in the US city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, local police said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An unidentified gunman opened fire on a couple and their four-year-old daughter in a vehicle on a crowded highway in New Mexico; the parents emerged unscathed but the girl was struck and mortally wounded.

"We are begging for the community's help. This is a complete disrespect of human life. This is something that should not be happening in Albuquerque, New Mexico," Albuquerque Police Department Chief Gorden Eden said on Tuesday, as quoted by the broadcaster KOAT.

The local police said the parents did not know the shooter and the case should be considered a road rage incident.

The local authorities are currently searching for the suspect’s vehicle, and have closed several lanes of Interstate 40.

“I've seen tragic loss of children in car crashes. To me, this is one of those crimes that is unexplainable. There is no way to explain your way out of this,” Eden said.
