Shanghai Cancels New Year Celebrations as 36 People Die in Stampede:Reports
Shanghai police have denied that the stampede was provoked after fake dollar bills were thrown out of a window from a nearby building into the crowd. This happened after the stampede incident and did not cause the rush, police officers say.

The incident took place in the Shanghai's historic riverfront area right before the clock struck midnight. According to various reports, police failed to restrain the flow of people, leading to an enormous amount of people crowding the area.

Shanghai authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident. Although the cause of the stampede still remains unknown, police have admitted that they were not prepared for such an enormous crowd who gathered to see the country’s massive New Year's show.
