MOSCOW, January 2 (Sputnik) — Shanghai officials published the list of 32 people who were killed during a New Year’s stampede, according to Shanghaiist.
The victims of the mass rush were predominantly young people in their twenties and women. The youngest among those killed was a 12-year boy.
The incident took place in the Shanghai's historic riverfront area right before the clock struck midnight. According to various reports, police failed to restrain the flow of people, leading to an enormous amount of people crowding the area.
Shanghai authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident. Although the cause of the stampede still remains unknown, police have admitted that they were not prepared for such an enormous crowd who gathered to see the country’s massive New Year's show.
