Progress cargo vessel is currently heading for the International Space Station, according to Central Command.

MOSCOW, October 29 (RIA Novosti) – The Progress cargo vessel, carrying supplies to the International Space Station (ISS), has successfully detached from the Soyuz carrier rocket and is currently heading for the International Space Station (ISS), a spokesman from the Central Command told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

"The cargo ship has detached from the carrier vessel," the spokesman said.

This is the first time the Progress has been launched from a Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket. Cargo vessels have previously been launched from Soyuz-U-PVB.

The launch was carried out from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

"The Progress M-25M will dock with the International Space Station at 4:09 p.m. Moscow time [1309 GMT] on the Pirs dock on the Russian segment of the ISS," the Central Command spokesman added.

The Progress is carrying fuel, air, oxygen, food, and equipment for scientific experiments, as well as letters for the US and Russian crews on the ISS.

On Tuesday, the Antares rocket with a Cygnus spacecraft carrying more than two tons of cargo to the ISS exploded six seconds after lifting off from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, United States.

NASA said that the ISS is able to rely on its own supplies until March 2015 if no other spacecraft makes it to the space station.
