WASHINGTON, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - Washington’s Howard University Hospital has admitted and is monitoring a patient with Ebola-like symptoms, the institution’s Assistant Vice President for University Communications & Marketing Kerry-Ann Hamilton told RIA Novosti in a statement on Friday.

"In an abundance of caution, we have activated the appropriate infection control protocols, including isolating the patient. Our medical team continues to evaluate and monitor progress in close collaboration with the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and the Department of Health," the statement read.

The patient, just returned from Nigeria, is currently in stable condition. The University Hospital has not yet confirmed whether he is actually infected with Ebola.

The first case of Ebola virus infection inside the United States was confirmed on Sunday. The patient was identified as a Liberian citizen Thomas Eric Duncan. He has been admitted to a Texas hospital after health workers mistakenly sent him home on September 25.

The worst Ebola outbreak in history is currently taking place in West Africa. It started in southern Guinea in February and has since spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal. The epidemic has killed over 3,300 out of approximately 7,100 cases, according to the World Health Organization. There is no officially approved cure for the disease, but several nations are working on a vaccine.
