MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - The world’s largest flash memory storage manufacturer San Disk has unleashed the world’s highest capacity SD card capable of storing up to 200,000 photos and designed for recording 4K video.

The company is positioning its new 512GB-flagship as a boon for professional photographers as its capacity allows them to shoot photos in high-res formats JPEG and RAW. In their turn, videographers will probably rejoice, too, as they finally find a long-anticipated SD card spacious enough to use in cutting-edge 4K video cameras. This storage-consuming Ultra HD format (3840x2160 ppi) requires at least 1 GB for each minute of video. As the company states, its new device guarantees high resolution, real-world color and stutter-free picture.

Reportedly, the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I has also successfully stood harsh condition tests: it  is waterproof, humidity and shock-resistant and can even survive X-rays. The device is engineered to work both under cold and extreme heat. Transfer speeds reach 90MB/s and 95MB/s respectively.

By this achievement, the company maintains its record breaking reputation after it launched the first ever 128GB-microSD in February and a 256GB-CompactFlash a year ago. As SanDisk notes, it has managed to surpass the capacity of its first SD card by 1000 times for a decade.

The SD card is initially priced at nearly $800 and has two “slimmer relatives” of 256GB and 128GB.

In conclusion, it is a good question whether photographers will prefer the new device to a bunch of smaller ones. On the one hand, storing all data on a single card is convenient; but on the other hand, smaller cards prevent losing all data at once. But it is doubtless that the tiny device can put an end to the external hard drive era.
