Americans are concerned about their own country, National Rifle Association (NRA) executive vice president told The Washington Times while explaining the association’s multimillion-dollar television advertising campaign appealing to the country’s vulnerable groups.

MOSCOW, September 5 (RIA Novosti) - Americans are concerned about their own country, National Rifle Association (NRA) executive vice president told The Washington Times while explaining the association’s multimillion-dollar television advertising campaign appealing to the country’s vulnerable groups.

“If you listen to the American public, there’s a sense of vulnerability they see for the country – that no one is fighting back and that our freedoms are being diminished,” Lapierre was quoted by The Washington Times as saying on Wednesday.

“[Americans] believe our country is off the rails,” LaPierre stated.

The NRA’s large-budget television advertising campaign aims to reach and appeal to middle-class mothers, minorities and other social groups in the United States beyond gun rights, at the same time urging them to return the power to ‘good guys,’ The Washington Times reported.

“It’s time to believe in the good guys again. We are the 5 million men and women of the National Rifle Association of America,” Lapierre declared.

According to The Washington Times, LaPierre accused the US government of ‘turning its [the country’s] tax collectors into secret police,’” referring to the 2013 IRS scandal, which revealed the Internal Revenue Service exercised bias towards certain political groups.

LaPierre also denounced the US government’s spying on its own people by saying that “the right to a private life is one of freedom’s greatest blessings.”
