PENZA, June 23 (RIA Novosti, Denis Sobolov) - The first joint Russian-Chinese enterprise for producing insulin on the basis of genetic engineering will be opened in this city in the Volga region, said a governor spokesman.

According to Anton Sharonov, the enterprise will produce 12 million insulin bottles a year, satisfying a third of Russia's demand.

Sharonov said the plant would produce insulin packed in bottles and special injection pens with cartridges to allow people to make injections in any conditions.

Sharonov said nearly 100% of insulin drugs were imported to Russia, and Russian-made insulin totaled a fraction of a percentage point.

"In 1989, the Soviet Health Ministry decided to stop producing insulin inside the country due to its poor quality, and began importing it. Since then, a few attempts were made to produce insulin in Russia, but all in vain. The Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Bio-organic Chemistry developed original technologies for producing quality human insulin based on genetic engineering. However, such production is still under development, and therefore cannot yet meet the country's demand," Sharonov said.

Insulin is an animal and human protein hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates sugar in the blood. Insulin is a major drug for curing diabetes. Earlier, insulin was made from cattle and pig pancreas. However, insulin based on genetic engineering is preferable, as it fully corresponds to the amino-acid composition of human insulin.
