Facebook will push forward its pioneer project of providing Internet connection through drones at the APEC Economic Leaders Week in Lima, Peru, a source from Facebook told Sputnik.

LIMA (Sputnik) — The main purpose of Facebook activities at the APEC this year is to promote the "Connectivity Revolution" project, which intends to introduce a new way of providing Internet access via drones, according to a Facebook representative, who preferred to stay unnamed.

"The drones are supposed to stay aloft, in the air, for 3 to 6 months, and beam down through laser connectivity into a net connection. So you can imagine that for a place that is very remote, rather than spending money for infrastructure, this can become a cheaper way to provide Internet access. It might become a reliable way," the source from Facebook told Sputnik.

The drones would reportedly provide the potential Internet users with a laser rather than hardware connection, which means that they can bring Internet not only to the economically disadvantaged areas, but also to the places where infrastructure has been totally destroyed by war or natural disasters.

The project is a "long bet" and its implementation can take from five to 10 years, according to the representative.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will attend this year's summit of the 21 Pacific Rim economies. He will meet with Peruvian President Pedro Kuczynsky, Minister of Education Jaime Saavedra and Minister for Transport and Comminications Martin Vizcarra during the APEC Economic Leaders week in Lima, Peru, local media reported citing Peru's Vice President Mercedez Araoz.

"Yes, there will be the meeting, but I don't have the details yet," Facebook spokesperson for the APEC events Guimel Bravo confirmed to Sputink.

Zuckerberg will arrive in Lima to participate in the APEC CEO Summit on November 17-19 and will present his "Connectivity Revolution" project on November 19.
