VIENNA (Sputnik), Alexander Mosesov — Speaking on the sidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency's Scientific Forum in Vienna, Andrew Wheatley said:
"We have seen them [Russian nuclear technologies] in use in a number of peaceful applications and the Government of Jamaica lauds them for the peaceful efforts and the technological advancements they [Russia] have made."
According to Wheatley, Jamaica is open to cooperation with Russia on peaceful nuclear technology projects.
"Russian technology is of use by the rest of the world. And, of course, in terms of industrial application, medical application, peaceful applications, Jamaica is open to collaboration [with Russia]," Andrew Wheatley said.
In the first two days of the Conference, which kicked off on Monday, Russia’s Rosatom nuclear energy corporation signed four bilateral documents ranging from agreements to memorandums of understanding with four countries.
Nuclear Power Plant Construction in Jamaica Possible in Long Term
Jamaica’s energy policy envisions the possibility of construction of a nuclear power plant in the future, but such possibility will not be addressed in the short term, Andrew Wheatley told Sputnik.
"As it is right now, our priorities are medicine, research and industrial applications. Our energy policy speaks to the possibility of using nuclear energy to generate electricity but not at this time."
Jamaica currently operates only one scientific nuclear reactor at the University of the West Indies International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences in Kingston.
