The US is among the most vulnerable states around to cyberattacks, the head of Iran's civil defense organization said on Saturday.

"The US is the most vulnerable country in defending its cyber space and structures," Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali told reporters during a news conference in Tehran, FARS news agency reported.

China Demands Evidence After US Accuses Beijing of Hacking Federal Database
His remarks came after reports said that hackers, who had attacked a US government database, could now be in possession of vast amounts of personal data on every federal employee.

Last week, the US Office of Personnel Management admitted a major cyberattack took place in December 2014, but it was only detected in April. The hack compromised the personal information of some four million federal employees, the agency originally said. US officials quickly blamed China for the attack but Beijing dismissed the claims as “irresponsible” and “counterproductive”.

Meanwhile, the top US general in charge of cybersecurity admitted that America’s critical infrastructure — which ranges from telecommunications to water to energy supplies — is not well prepared to handle a destructive cyberattack.

National Security Agency chief General Keith Alexander, who is also in charge of the US military's Cyber Command, told the Reuters Cybersecurity Summit last month that the United States was increasingly vulnerable to attacks like those that destroyed data on tens of thousands of computers in Saudi Arabia and South Korea in the past year.
