In 2006, some of the world’s brightest minds came together with a question on every 14-year-old boy’s mind: how awesome would space sex be? Held during the annual Space Frontier Foundation conference, the Sex in Space panel featured speakers from NASA considering the "biological, emotional, and physical issues that will confront people moving [off] Earth] into the space environment."
It’s a critical question, especially as scientists begin to seriously consider the possibility of colonizing other worlds. Unfortunately, NASA has been busy calculating launch trajectories or alternate fuel sources or whatever else NASA does. Sex doesn’t top the space agency’s priority list.
You know where sex is a priority? Porn. And one of the biggest companies in the business is hoping to become an unlikely ally of science.
"There are many elements about life in space that need careful consideration and research…especially sex," the website Pornhub announced. "As such, Pornhub is…joining the ranks of Armstrong and Gagarin by pioneering a one of a kind mission to defy gravity, make history, and push the boundaries of intergalactic 'Sexploration' by filming the first ever sextape in space."
That’s the title, by the way. "Sexplorations." And just to be clear, we’re not talking about a porn film set in space. Lots of those have been made. We’re talking about porn filmed in space.
To do that, the company is obviously going to need a rocket. A rocket ship, I mean. That’s going to cost big money, and to reach the estimated $3.4 million needed, Pornhub is using crowdfunding site IndieGogo.
That sounds like a lot of money, but the Pornhub site receives nearly 16 billion visits per year. That means that this project could be fully funded if each user paid less than a nickel for all that free porn they’re watching.
The largest financers will even get to have a say in the production, giving script input – dialogue is crucial, here – and requesting certain positions.
Some will even get to keep props from the set. Still, I think most people would pay money not to store props from a zero gravity sex shoot in their home.
If everything goes according to plan, Pornhub has already lined up actors Johnny Sins and Eva Lovia to star in the project, and both will have to undergo "six months of rigorous training" prior to the 2016 launch date.
"We will not only be changing the face of the adult industry," Pornhub says, "we will also be chronicling how a core component of human life operates while in orbit."
One can only imagine what the space suits will look like.
