MOSCOW (Sputnik) - North Macedonia has decided to expel a Russian diplomat, the embassy confirmed on Tuesday.

"We confirm the expulsion of one Russian diplomat by the authorities of North Macedonia. The Russian side is considering retaliatory steps", the diplomatic mission stated.

Russian Ambassador Sergei Bazdikin was summoned to the Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs last week, where he was informed that the diplomat must leave the country within seven days, according to the MKD news website.

"In line with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention, the foreign ministry made a decision to declare one diplomat from the Russian embassy persona non grata in the Republic of North Macedonia", the ministry said in a statement.

The causes behind this step of Skopje remain unclear.
