MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia can register its third vaccine against the coronavirus in a month, Anna Popova, the head of the national public health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said on Thursday.

"I want to say that the Russian Federation has two vaccines, and I'm sure that the third vaccine will be registered in a month”, Popova told the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

The statement was published after Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday announced the registration of the second vaccine against the coronavirus, developed by the Vector centre. Phase 2 trials of the third vaccine, created by the Chumakov Federal Scientific Centre for Research, will start next week.

In August, Russia became the first country in the world to register a vaccine against COVID-19, dubbed Sputnik V and developed by the Gamaleya research institute. Gamaleya's drug requires two injections, using different adenoviral vectors, in order to form immunity from the coronavirus that can last up to two years.
