Both Armenia and Azerbaijan previously confirmed their readiness to engage in negotiations that are expected to take place in Moscow later on Friday.

"It is important to ensure an immediate cessation of all hostilities, to begin a diplomatic settlement of the conflict. Russia is ready to assist in this jointly with other co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group", Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin explained during the Eurasian Economic Union meeting.

He also expressed condolences to those who have lost friends and family due to the clashes.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region saw the eruption of clashes on 27 September, with both Yerevan and Baku exchanging accusations of sparking the hostilities and attacking civilian and military objects along the line of contact.

A damaged building hit by the recent shelling is seen in Stepanakert, the self-proclaimed Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Nagorno-Karabakh, or Artsakh, an Armenian-majority region, proclaimed independence from Azerbaijan in 1991. The move resulted in a major military conflict between Baku and Yerevan. However, in 1994 the sides agreed to start peace talks on the dispute mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group, which is headed by Russia, the US, and France.

The hostilities have since remained frozen, with Nagorno-Karabakh remaining an unrecognised state.
