The explosion occurred due to a violation of safety requirements at work, the Russian Defence Ministry reports.

Five Northern Fleet servicemen have sustained injuries after an artillery shell exploded at a warehouse complex in Murmansk Oblast, the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

"According to preliminary data, the blast occurred as a result of the violation of safety requirements during loading and unloading operations on the technical territory of the warehouse complex", the ministry said in a statement.

The Northern Fleet's command has launched an investigation into the incident. The injured have been taken to a military hospital where they have received all the necessary medical help. Their lives are not threatened.

The Northern Fleet is a branch of the Russian Navy in the Arctic that is headquartered at Severomorsk in Russia's north-western Murmansk Oblast.
