GUBKIN (Sputnik) — The distortion of historical facts has been constantly used as a tool in the fight against Russia ever since the country started to get stronger, Vladimir Putin said on Friday.

"As for the distortion of our history, you know, it has almost always taken place. Throughout all our history… This tool had always been used in the fight against Russia," Putin said at a meeting with employees of Lebedinsky Mining and Processing Plant in Russia's Belgorod Region.

The falsification of the Russian history is an attempt to compete with Russia, and this competition is permanent, Putin noted.

"Russia began to stabilize, to get stronger, and it was necessary [for the West] to put a little pressure on it. And the insinuations immediately started to be made, the distortion of history," the Russian president said.

Putin added that Russia should continue to demonstrate its own position in clear and persistent manner.

On April 20, Putin said that the falsification of history led to disunity in the world and was fraught with huge risks.
