MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia's communications watchdog (Roskomnadzor) has deleted extremist content from 22,000 web pages and blocked over 2,000 websites providing such kind of information, Roskomnadzor's head Alexander Zharov said on Saturday.
"The total number of sites blocked is reaching tens of thousands. The extremist content was deleted from 22,000 web sites. And 10 percent or more than 2,000 resources created by terrorists and extremists were blocked permanently," Zharov in an interview with NTV broadcaster.
Zharov added that Roskomnadzor was able to predict where the content would appear and how it would spread, so the agency could quickly block the extremist resources.
The Daesh terrorist group, outlawed in Russia, has been actively using internet and social media networks to spread its jihadist ideology and recruit new members. Governments of many states, including Russia, have undertaken serious measures to fight IS propaganda in the Internet.
