The work of human rights activists in ensuring political rights and freedoms of citizens is crucial for the state as people must feel that they live in a society, which responds to their needs, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the president, the citizens "must feel that they live in a society, which responds to their needs and problems."

"Whatever you do, I never forget about social rights … but we understand that issues of political freedoms and citizens’ rights are not less important. This is the field of activity, which, undoubtedly, is in demand both with the state and the society, because all these areas must strengthen our country, make it more civilized, consolidated," Putin said at the national award ceremony for outstanding achievements in human rights and charity work.

National award for outstanding achievements in human rights and charity work was established in 2016 and is conferred for the first time.
