Russian security services have killed a Daesh terrorist group affiliate cell leader.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian security services have killed a Daesh terrorist group affiliate cell leader in the southern Russian city of Makhachkala, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said Sunday.

"Rustan Magomedovich Aselderov (Abu Muhammad), born in 1981, the leader of the Vilayat Kavkaz section of the Islamic State international terrorist group, was among the eliminated militants alongside four of his close associates," the FSB said in a statement.

Automatic weapons were found at the site alongside a large number of ammunition and explosives, the statement added.

Aselderov was involved organizing the 2013 suicide bombing attack in Russia's Volgograd, which killed over a dozen people, according to the statement.

On December 29, 2013, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at the entrance of Volgograd's main train station, killing 18 people and injuring dozens more.

The terrorist cell leader was first noted by security services when taking part in militant activities in Dagestan as far back as 2007. Aselderov became the leader of the local Caucasus Emirate jihadist cell in 2012. In 2015, Daesh said the Caucasus Emirate had pledged allegiance to its cause.

Daesh is a terrorist organization that took over large parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014. It is outlawed in many countries, including Russia.
