Russia to Forward Yaroshenko Defense Team's Transfer Request to US
12:09 GMT 11.10.2016 (Updated: 04:53 GMT 26.11.2022) The Russian Justice Ministry has received an appeal from the defense team of Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko to request that US authorities transfer him to Russia, it said in a statement on Monday, adding that it planned to forward the request to Washington.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Yaroshenko's lawyer Alexei Tarasov said late last month that the defense team has officially asked the Justice Ministry to request that the US authorities transfer him to Russia to serve out his sentence.
"The Russian Justice Ministry received a copy of Tarasov's request, from the Russian Foreign Ministry to transfer Yaroshenko to Russia. In this regard, the Justice Ministry has prepared an appeal to the competent authorities in the United States to be sent through diplomatic channels" the ministry said.
Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot sentenced to 20 years in prison for conspiring to import more than $100 million worth of cocaine into the United States, was arrested in Liberia in 2010 and subsequently extradited to the United States.
In April, the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that arguments made to reverse Yaroshenko’s conviction lacked merit. In a March letter to Sputnik, the jailed pilot said the court ignored a lot of evidence that proved US prosecutors and drug enforcement authorities had fabricated the case against him.
