Russia currently holds the second place in arms exports and it should maintain this position, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Monday.

GORKY (Russia) (Sputnik) – He called on Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin to control the implementation of the newly-approved defense industry development program for 2016-2020 worth over 1 trillion rubles (over $15 billion). Medvedev also urged to produce modern defense equipment.

"We have good indicators in global arms trade, we are in fact the second country which supplies arms on the international level in such quantities. We need to maintain this position. This can only be done with a modern defense industry," Medvedev said.

Last December, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) published its annual report of the world’s 100 largest arms manufacturers, ranked in terms of sales, where it said that in 2014 Russian arms industry’s sales continued their upward trend, despite difficulties in the country’s economy, caused by Western economic sanctions
