MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has discussed the prospects of the upcoming intra-Syrian reconciliation talks in Geneva with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.
“The prospects of the Syrian [crisis] settlement were discussed ahead of the Geneva negotiations that are to begin,” Peskov said.
Switzerland is about to host the much-anticipated peace talks between the Syrian government and the opposition in order to settle the ongoing civil war in the country.
The January intra-Syrian talks are prerequisite for the implementation of the UN Security Council's Resolution 2254 adopted on December 18, which sets out a road map for a peace process in Syria and also calls for an immediate ceasefire.
