The North Stream 2 gas pipeline is an exclusively commercial project that is beneficial for both Russia and the European Union and those who criticize it are attempting to hamper ties between Moscow and Europe, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Lavrov raised attention to attempts by a range of countries to reject the project using ideological criticism and making calls not to cooperate with Russia “because it would harm Ukraine.” Lavrov noted that Europe is currently dependent on Ukraine for transit gas supplies from Russia.

“[The North Stream 2 gas pipeline project] is a strictly economic and commercial project beneficial obviously to Germany and all of Europe and beneficial for Russia,” Lavrov said during his annual press conference in Moscow.
