Unidentified gunmen shot dead a lawmaker of the Russian Kabardino-Balkaria region's parliament in his home, a law enforcement source said Saturday.

NALCHIK (Russia) (Sputnik) – The politician was also a doctor, heading a hospital in the region, which is located in the North Caucasus.

"The unknown [gunmen] entered the household of Hadis Bottayev, the chief physician of the republican hospital… and shot him dead," the source told RIA Novosti.

According to the Russian Investigative committee, Bottayev was shot in the head Saturday morning. A criminal investigation into the shooting was launched.

Bottayev, 50, was elected lawmaker of the Kabardino-Balkaria region from the United Russia party last September.
