MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Two units of the advanced S-400 Triumf air defense missile systems were delivered to Russian Western Military District forces in the Leningrad Region, a district spokesman said Wednesday.
"New military equipment has been accepted for combat duty for air border protection in the northwest of Russia," Col. Oleg Kochetkov said.
Kochetkov noted that the S-400 Triumf, Russia's next-generation anti-aircraft system, was designed to acquire and destroy current and future aerospace attacks. At a range of 400 kilometers (248 miles) the system is capable of hitting aircraft and cruise missiles, and, at a distance of up to 60 kilometers, it can destroy ballistic targets.
Russia is currently carrying out a $325-billion rearmament program to modernize 70-percent of its military equipment by 2020.
